“You do that,” Deuce agreed. “Scare the crap right out of them for me.”

“Maybe you can do what we didn’t.” Their drinks arrived and Trey accepted his gratefully. “So, the barbecue. Deuce and I were thinking of having it late afternoon and maybe hiring a band.”

Nate stared at him. “A band?”

“Well, not like professionals or anything.” Trey grinned and sipped from his glass. “A couple of guys I know from work get together on weekends and play stuff. Cover band kind of thing. They’ll play our barbecue for a hundred bucks and free food.”

Deuce looked amused at his father’s reaction, but said nothing. Trey knew he was looking forward to it, was even planning what “free food” would be worthy of an actual band.

“That’s pretty fancy for the first time I get to meet Lacey,” Nate said. “Although I guess if she hates me she can just dance off to the sounds of the band. So can I, for that matter.”

“Oh, relax.” Deuce rolled his eyes. “She’s going to love you. You’re weird enough to get her sense of humor, after all.” He grinned at his dad.

Trey nodded in agreement. “She’s a good kid. I don’t think she’s ever hated anyone in her life. Even me, when Holly and I finally separated.” He rolled his eyes and was so glad that awful transition time had passed. “Ask her about the dogs or some of her pictures. And her teacher; she loves her teacher.”

It occurred to Trey that the last time he’d coached someone on how to get on his daughter’s good side, he’d been sleeping with them. Since he most definitely wasn’t sleeping with Deuce’s father, he had a moment of wondering exactly how Nate was going to fit into his daughter’s life. And how Holly was going to react to all these new people around Lacey.
